Joe Viera Park at Schoonord, West Bank Demerara, is undergoing a major transformation into what promises to be the Caribbean’s premier recreational space.

Currently in its early stages, the project has received a push from Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodar Indar, who is looking to expedite its completion. Originally set to wrap up in January 2026, Indar is now aiming to finish the park within 15 months, accelerating the timeline by three months. He has also urged the contractor to extend working hours to speed up progress.

“”We are eager to see this project come to a completion,” Indar said during his visit to the site on Friday.

“I have asked our Chinese counterpart and the contractor to see if they can put in some extra hours so the delivery of sand and loom can be accelerated…so that the delivery of works can rapidly progress,” Indar said on Friday.,”

The Joe Viera Park is a beloved spot for residents of Region Three, offering a place for relaxation and leisure. The ambitious $12 million project, funded entirely by a grant from China, is the vision of President Dr. Irfaan Ali.

Once completed, the park will feature a range of amenities, including sports facilities with football and basketball courts, a serene pond, a dedicated children’s play area, and an elevated walkway. Additionally, a Guyana/China friendship monument will be installed to celebrate the strong ties between the two nations.

“The project is really to deliver a park that is unmatched anywhere in the Caribbean. I know based on the design the final product will make it an unmatched park,” Indar said.

Despite initial challenges, such as securing affordable sand, the project has overcome these hurdles. Indar emphasized the commitment to accelerating the work.

The Joe Viera Park initiative is one of several government projects aimed at fostering a greener, safer economy.
