The five-day National Toshaos Council (NTC) Conference 2024, held at the Arthur Chung Conference Center, concluded with a powerful declaration of support for Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030. The unanimous endorsement from all NTC executive members marked a significant moment in the country’s journey toward sustainable development.

This commitment reflects a collective vision for a green future and a strategic shift towards a low-carbon economy.

The LCDS 2030 is designed to forge a new growth trajectory that minimizes environmental impact. It aims to create economic opportunities while preserving Guyana’s rich ecosystems. By incentivizing the protection of tropical forests and valuing their ecosystem services, the strategy addresses long-standing calls from tropical forest countries for better recognition of these vital environmental assets.

Here are key points from the resolution:

  • The NTC, representing the voices and interests of Indigenous Peoples across Guyana, highlights the importance of sustainable development in preserving natural resources and enhancing community well-being.
  • The LCDS 2030 aligns with international Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate commitments, positioning Guyana as a leader in both sustainable development and climate change mitigation.
  • The resolution acknowledges the crucial role of Indigenous communities in managing Guyana’s forests and combating climate change through traditional knowledge and practices.
  • The LCDS 2030 promises tangible benefits for Indigenous communities, including sustainable livelihoods, improved infrastructure, better education and healthcare services, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The NTC’s resolution also commits to active collaboration with the Government of Guyana, civil society, and other stakeholders. The focus will be on ensuring the successful implementation of the LCDS 2030, promoting sustainable livelihoods, enhancing community resilience, and preserving cultural and natural heritage for future generations.

The National Toshaos Council’s unanimous support for the Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030 underscores a shared commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. This resolution not only reaffirms the role of Indigenous communities in Guyana’s environmental strategy but also sets a precedent for collaborative efforts in achieving a greener future.
