Investigators probing the drive-by shooting at D’Urban Street, Georgetown, which left one person dead and several injured, have recovered the car used in the crime. The vehicle was allegedly stolen from a woman minutes before the shooting.
The development comes hours after the shooting that left 40-year-old Anthony Havescome, known as ‘Pandit,’ dead.
Five other people—Travis Ceres, a 25-year-old vendor from East La Penitence; Teon Allen, known as ‘Spoil Child,’ a 38-year-old resident of Sophia; Stanley Matthews, a 31-year-old laborer also from Sophia; Destra Auther, a 33-year-old vendor from East La Penitence; and Lenox Wayne, also known as ‘Two Colour,’ a 39-year-old security guard from Turkeyen—were injured and are all hospitalized.
The shooting occurred around 05:30 hrs and was allegedly committed by four men, all armed with handguns. They have yet to be arrested.
In providing an update, Police Headquarters said investigators, acting on information received, went to Manatee Place, South Ruimveldt, Georgetown, around 09:30 hrs. Upon arrival, police observed a black Toyota Premio motor car, without a number plate, parked on the eastern carriageway of Manatee Place.
The vehicle was examined, and the registration number PAC 8364 was found engraved on the windscreens. The police added that the vehicle was processed, and eleven 9mm spent shells, along with one .223 spent shell, were found in the front and back seats of the car. Two suspected bullet holes were also seen in the right back passenger door, and what appeared to be a graze from a bullet on the left side of the back of the car.
During further investigation, the police said the car’s owner, Coleen Burrowe, a 33-year-old businesswoman, was contacted and interviewed. According to the police, the woman said that around 04:00 hrs Saturday, she was driving east along D’Urban Street, Georgetown, with a friend and two cousins.
While at D’Urban and Victor Street, the woman claimed she felt an urgent need to urinate, so she stopped the car. During this time, she was approached by two men on a white XR motorcycle. The pillion rider dismounted the motorcycle, held her at gunpoint, and demanded that she hand over the car.
In fear for her life, the woman and the other occupants exited the car, and the suspect made his escape. The woman then went to the East La Penitence Police Station to make a report.
As the investigation continued, the scene was processed, and twenty-nine 9mm spent shells, one live suspected 9mm round, four metal fragments, and six projectiles were recovered.
The shooting took place near V’s Delight. The owner of the business, Keon Aaron, a 37-year-old businessman, had hosted an ‘All Black’ party for the second anniversary of his business, which was stopped by the police.
According to the police, the businessman said that while some people left the party, a few others remained in front of his business. While checking off his bar, he heard several loud explosions and then noticed a dark-colored, heavily-tinted car speeding off in a western direction. He saw the men with what appeared to be blood on their bodies and assisted in placing them in vehicles to be transported to the hospital.
At least two of the men who were shot are known to the police due to previous encounters with the law.
