A 56-year-old man, Julius Inniss, known as ‘Storme’, died on Monday afternoon after reportedly setting his home on fire following a domestic dispute. The incident took place at Lot 18, Catherine, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, around 15:00 hrs. The fire completely destroyed the house, which belonged to the man’s wife, Shellon Inniss.

Earlier that day, at about 11:20 hrs, Shellon visited the Mahaicony Police Station to report a domestic assault involving her husband. She was escorted by a police constable to the Mahaicony Hospital for medical attention.

Shellon later returned to the police station around 14:30 hrs, to provide a statement regarding the assault.

At approximately 14:50 hrs, three police ranks accompanied Shellon back to her home. Upon their arrival, they saw Julius run into the house and barricade himself inside. Shortly after, the officers noticed smoke coming from one side of the building and saw Julius at a window with a bottle, setting the house on fire.

The Mahaica Fire Service was contacted but despite their efforts, the structure was reduced to ashes when they arrived.

After the fire was extinguished, the charred remains of Julius was found.
