President rebuffs early objections from AFC to construction of new Berbice River Bridge

President Dr. Irfaan Ali is firm in his support for his government’s planned construction of a new Berbice River Bridge, despite facing early objections from the opposition Alliance For Change (AFC) regarding the project’s feasibility and cost.

In a weekend announcement, President Ali detailed the vision for a modern, fixed high span bridge, comparing it to the new Demerara Harbour Crossing currently under construction. The new bridge in Berbice is set to replace the existing floating structure built in 2008.

The AFC has raised concerns about the practicality and financial implications of the project, questioning its overall viability. However, in a follow-up discussion with government ministers Zulfikar Mustapha and Oneidge Walrond on Tuesday, President Ali strongly reiterated his support for the project.

“We have already outlined Berbice as a major industrial hub with planned developments including a port facility, a new industrial zone, and road improvements,” President Ali said.

He criticized the AFC’s objections, suggesting their stance is more politically motivated than concerned with genuine developmental issues.

The president highlighted what he perceives as inconsistencies in the AFC’s approach to infrastructure and development. “When I inquired about a socio-economic study to inform decisions on the sugar estates, they dismissed it as unnecessary. Now, they demand extensive plans for new projects,” Ali noted.

The new Berbice River Bridge is envisioned to support the growing economic activity in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), including the Palmyra expansion, a new gas project, and an industrial park with port facilities.

The Government of Guyana has issued a Request for Prequalification for contractors, and President Ali emphasized that the bridge will feature advanced design and structural capabilities similar to the Demerara Harbour Crossing.

The president remains firm in his commitment to the project, asserting that a “futuristic design capacity and capability” will be integral to the new bridge. A comprehensive review and planning process are anticipated to be completed by the end of the year.

Despite the AFC’s objections, President Ali is confident that the new bridge will be a cornerstone of regional development, improving connectivity and supporting economic growth in Berbice.
