With above-normal temperatures expected across Guyana from September to November 2024, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is urging the public to take heightened fire safety measures.

The Hydrometeorological Service has forecasted a period of extreme heat, particularly during the traditionally warm months of September and October, which may lead to an increased risk of fires and heat-related impacts on public health, agriculture, and livestock.

In response to these conditions, the Guyana Fire Service has outlined key guidelines to help mitigate fire risks during this heatwave period:

  1. Avoid Open Flames: Residents are advised to refrain from burning debris, agricultural waste, or engaging in activities that could spark a fire. If burning is necessary, it is crucial to monitor fires closely to prevent them from spreading.
  2. Monitor Water Sources: Keep water sources accessible for firefighting efforts and ensure that fire hydrants are not obstructed.
  3. Report Fires Promptly: Any sighting of a fire should be reported immediately to the Guyana Fire Service. Early detection and intervention are essential to controlling and extinguishing fires.
  4. Community Awareness: Increase awareness within your community regarding the elevated fire risks and promote adherence to safety protocols.
  5. Equip Homes and Businesses: Ensure that residential and commercial properties are equipped with fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and smoke alarms.
  6. Implement Evacuation Plans: Develop and practice evacuation plans for both homes and businesses to facilitate a swift and orderly response in the event of a fire.

The Guyana Fire Service emphasizes the importance of staying informed and proactive in protecting lives, property, and the environment during this period of heightened temperatures.

Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant, implement fire safety measures, and report emergencies by calling 912 or 226-2411-3.

In this challenging period, staying safe and cool, while helping to prevent fires, is crucial for all residents.
