In a major boost for Mocha/Arcadia on East Bank Demerara, the government has committed another $150 million to accelerate road improvements and support local farming initiatives.

The announcement, made by key ministers during a community visit on Wednesday, includes plans for new road construction and upgrades, and enhanced agricultural support.

Ministers Zulfikar Mustapha (Agriculture), Sonia Parag (Local Government and Regional Development), Deodat Indar (Public Works), and Kwame McCoy (Office of the Prime Minister) were present to unveil the development plan and address residents’ concerns.

The new funding will build upon the $400 million already invested in road improvements and will see the completion of seven roads, such as the extensions of Nelson Street and Plantation Prosperity, and upgrades to Palm Street and Morning Glory, along with five additional cross streets.

Local contractors from Mocha/Arcadia will be hired for the work under the supervision of the Ministry of Public Works, with procurement expected to be finalized within two weeks.

Additional upgrades include the installation of a tractor pump for land drainage and the clearing of 27 internal drains and beds as part of the development program’s first phase.

In response to concerns from local farmers, Minister Mustapha assured that the government will provide necessary planting materials and technical support to bolster agricultural productivity, emphasizing the connection between successful farmers and overall community success.

Following the announcement, the ministers conducted a walkabout to inspect ongoing improvements and gather resident feedback. Minister McCoy urged patience, highlighting that the development will occur in phases and require incremental progress.

The government’s commitment extends beyond Mocha/Arcadia, with similar sectoral enhancements planned for other communities across Guyana.
