Taxes owed by PNC/R could fund City Council for three years – Jagdeo

The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) could be funded for up to three years by the taxes owed solely by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R), according to Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo.

The amount would cover the salaries of all staff, garbage collection, and other services, Jagdeo stated on Thursday.

During his weekly press briefing at Freedom House in Georgetown, Jagdeo noted that the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) councillors have discovered a lack of accountability regarding the funds received by the City Council up until now.

“Absolutely none; for funds transferred to them or for rates and taxes.

“I’m hoping that this issue doesn’t get swept under the carpet because this is one that brings the PNC and AFC into the spotlight and it tells you about how they deal with institutions. They operate with impunity and arrogance,” Jagdeo remarked.

Previously, Jagdeo criticized the City Council’s decision to reduce tax rates for political parties, arguing that the move benefits the PNC/R. He condemned the council’s motion to lower tax and rate payments for political parties to just 25 per cent of the current amounts.

Jagdeo suggested that the council’s decision might have been motivated by ulterior motives, especially given the PNC/R’s tax arrears. The PNC/R owes the City Council approximately $6.7 billion in unpaid taxes, specifically for their headquarters at Congress Place, Sophia.]

Additional sums are owed for other properties owned by the party in the city.
