During a recent four-day visit to the United States, Senior Minister in the Office of the President, Dr. Ashni Singh met with key officials from the U.S. Export-Import (EXIM) Bank to discuss vital support for Guyana’s ambitious Gas to Energy project.
The development in Wales on the West Bank Demerara (WBD) is making significant progress, with the government allocating a substantial US$400 million from its resources to advance the project despite delays in securing a US$660 million loan.
Accompanied by Guyana’s Ambassador to the U.S., Samuel Hinds, Dr. Singh’s meeting with Larry T. Decker, Senior Advisor to the President and Chair of EXIM Bank, was a focal point of his visit.
The discussions centered on securing the necessary support from EXIM Bank to advance this critical project, which is expected to play a pivotal role in Guyana’s economic future.

Throughout the visit, Dr. Singh engaged with several other high-level U.S. officials, including Michael Kaplan from the U.S. Department of Treasury, Isobel Coleman of USAID, and Under Secretary of State Jose W. Fernandez.
These meetings further underscored the strengthening of economic and bilateral ties between Guyana and the United States, focusing on areas such as trade, energy security, and economic development.
Dr. Singh emphasized the strategic importance of the Gas to Energy project for Guyana, highlighting its potential to reduce electricity costs and boost economic competitiveness.
He expressed appreciation for EXIM Bank’s ongoing support and reiterated the Government of Guyana’s commitment to fostering a favorable environment for U.S. investment.
The visit also included discussions with Daniel Watson from the U.S. Trade Representative’s office and Sergio Díaz-Granados of the Corporacion Andina de Fomento (CAF), exploring additional avenues for collaboration and investment.
Dr. Singh’s engagement with these key U.S. institutions marks a significant step in fortifying Guyana’s economic partnership with the United States, aiming to unlock further growth and development opportunities.
