Dr. Malcolm Goodchild, a prominent Guyanese-born physician, lost his life in a head-on collision on Interstate 85 on Saturday.

The accident, which occurred near Exit 62 northbound, involved two vehicles and resulted in one of the cars catching fire.

Dr. Goodchild, 50, who was the President of CMG Surgical Specialists and a former general and trauma surgeon, was airlifted to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, GA.

Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at 20:49 hrs from injuries sustained in the crash.

The Opelika Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 19:17 hrs, finding two vehicles involved in the collision.

Authorities managed to extinguish the fire temporarily until the Opelika Fire Department arrived. Two other individuals involved in the crash were transported to a nearby hospital; their conditions remain undisclosed.

Dr. Goodchild, originally from New Amsterdam, Berbice, was widely respected in the medical community.

Colleagues and friends took to social media to express their shock and sadness. Rachael Crain, a former colleague, described Dr. Goodchild as an inspiring presence in the operating room at Piedmont Columbus Hospital, known for his extensive knowledge, engaging demeanor, and passion for his work.
