A catastrophe was avoided on Monday when a fire set by a convicted prisoner of unsound mind was quickly extinguished, the Guyana Prison Service revealed in a Facebook post. The prisoner identified as Delon Blake, who is serving 20 years for rape, allegedly lit his mattress at approximately 14:00 hours in his cell in the security block of the prison.

The Prison Service revealed that Blake and another inmate, Christopher Stanley, were injured. They were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital for treatment.

“It is unclear at this moment the severity of their injuries,” the Prison Service noted.

Officer in Charge of the Georgetown Prison, Senior Superintendent Olivia Cox, reported that the situation was quickly brought under control by the officers on duty at the prison. There was a joint response to the situation. Currently, the situation is under control.
