CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited has reinforced its commitment to education by partnering with the Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central for a reading initiative aimed at children with autism.

The collaboration supported the 10th Annual READ Activity, held at Queen’s College Auditorium on World Literacy Day.

The event, designed to use reading as a gateway for children with autism to unlock their potential, brought together several organizations, including the Sameir! Uniquely Me Foundation, Gifted Hands Learning Centre for Special Needs, David Rose Special School, and the Ministry of Education.

Now in its 10th year, the READ programme – which stands for Read Every Day and Discover – focuses on fostering inclusivity. This year’s theme, ‘Pages of Potential,’ highlighted efforts to create opportunities for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Terriesa Smith, Director of Rotaract Georgetown Central, noted that the initiative is focused on groups that are often marginalized, aiming to foster understanding and inclusion. “This year we’re catering specifically to children living with autism spectrum disorder (ASD),” Smith said, adding that last year’s efforts were directed towards supporting migrant Venezuelan children.

Speaking on behalf of CNOOC, Tanza McAlmont, CSR Analyst, expressed the company’s pride in being involved with a project that promotes multilingual education and literacy, emphasizing its importance for mutual understanding and peace.

The event featured a range of interactive sessions, including storytime, games, and coloring activities, all designed to engage children and promote learning in a fun, inclusive environment.
