Over 10 artists and craftsmen from across the country are participating in the second annual Heritage Month Art Exhibition that is being held in observance of Amerindian Heritage Month 2024.
The exhibition opened last Monday at Castellani House in Georgetown to showcase the pieces by Guyanese of indigenous descent or the work by others that was inspired by the indigenous heritage.
The curator of the exhibition, Pekahiah James, was tasked with putting it together and reaching out to the artists to bring together the collection that reflects intense research and a deep understanding of indigenous culture and traditions.
“While Guyanese culture is promoted, the artists get to present their work in a gallery space outside of just their own personal collections. So persons who are interested in a particular artist or genres of work can come to the gallery to view it,” James shared, adding, “Any form of art helps to pass down our traditions; help to pass down knowledge of the Indigenous Peoples.”
The exhibition will run until September 30. Since it opened, quite a few pieces have already been sold. This year also featured a fashion display with designers presenting indigenous wear.
