Amid ongoing power outages affecting residents across the nation, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips convened a high-level meeting on Wednesday with key stakeholders from the energy sector.

The meeting, held at his office on Camp Street, aimed to address the urgent need for a reliable power supply in Guyana.

In light of the pressing energy challenges, the discussions focused on immediate, medium, and long-term strategies for power generation and distribution. The Prime Minister, who oversees the energy sector, underscored the importance of ensuring a stable and sufficient energy supply for the Guyanese people.

“Access to reliable electricity is not just a necessity; it is fundamental to our nation’s progress,” said Prime Minister Phillips. He, along with Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, issued directives to the assembled entities, emphasizing the urgent need for collaborative action.

Attendees included senior representatives from major power providers such as Guyana Power and Light (GPL), Power Producers and Distributors Incorporated (PPDI), and the Hinterland Electrification Company Inc. (HECCI). The Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) was also represented, highlighting a unified front in tackling the energy crisis.

The meeting featured comprehensive briefings on the current state of power generation and distribution, with insights from key figures, including the GEA’s CEO, Dr. Mahender Sharma, and Acting CEO of GPL, Mr. Kesh Nandlall. The discussions aimed to foster innovative solutions and outline actionable plans to mitigate the impact of outages on citizens’ daily lives.

As Guyanese continue to grapple with electricity shortages, this strategic meeting marks a critical step toward revitalizing the nation’s power infrastructure.
