In what can be an exciting development for student-athletes across Guyana, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has announced significant enhancements to the National Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year.

This initiative aims to promote athletic excellence while aligning with recommendations from key stakeholders, including the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG), and the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU).

The changes are designed to provide a more structured and effective platform for young athletes, ensuring they are well-prepared for both local and regional competitions.

Notable improvements include:

  1. Optimized Schedule: The championships will take place during a period free of international events, maximizing participation and focus on local talent.
  2. Age-Appropriate Competitions: In line with World Athletics recommendations, the introduction of “Kids Athletics” will ensure that younger participants engage in events tailored to their age group.
  3. Enhanced Athlete Development: The establishment of a national database will facilitate talent identification and training across various regions, ensuring that athletes receive the support they need to thrive.
  4. Expert Officiating: The AAG will provide trained technical officials at all levels of competition, enhancing the quality and fairness of events.
  5. Reduced Instructional Time Impact: The new structure allows for reduced disruptions to classroom learning, as competitions will be scheduled more efficiently.

Timeline of Events

The championship events will be organized as follows:

  • Standard Trials (September): All primary and secondary schools will introduce students to track and field events, helping to prepare them for competitive participation.
  • Inter-House Competitions (October): Schools will conduct house competitions to select their teams for the upcoming regional contests.
  • Regional Inter-School Competitions (November-February): Under the supervision of Regional Education Departments and the Unit of Allied Arts, schools will compete, with the best performers advancing to the National Championships.
  • National Schools Championships (March): The culmination of the season will see top athletes representing their schools at the national level, showcasing their talents on a grand stage.
The National Track and Field Facility at Leonora on the West Coast of Demerara was officially opened April 2015 and is in need of some repairs ahead of the South American Under-23 Championship in September

Engaging Activities for All

The revamped competition structure includes a variety of events for different age groups, ensuring inclusivity and participation from all student-athletes. In addition to traditional track and field events, schools are encouraged to incorporate fun novelty events, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and enjoyment among participants.

This initiative not only enhances the athletic experience for students but also builds a strong foundation for the future of sports in Guyana. With the support of dedicated educators and athletic organizations, the 2024-2025 National Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships promise to be an inspiring journey for young athletes throughout the nation.
