Guyana’s Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, has announced a new initiative aimed at addressing the challenges posed by motor lorries on city streets.
In a recent interview with the News Room, Edghill highlighted the need for comprehensive policies that could significantly reduce the issues stemming from these large vehicles.
During his visit to the New Demerara River Bridge at Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara, Edghill expressed his concerns following a troubling rise in accidents involving trucks, some of which have tragically resulted in fatalities.
To combat this, the ministry is actively engaging truck drivers on the importance of road safety.
“Truck drivers are our family, they are our neighbours, they are Guyanese citizens. Any country that development is taking place as rapidly as is happening in Guyana, is what is called birth pains, and we just have to be able to develop a culture of safety,” he said.
The proposed policies will focus on several key areas, including speed regulations, the use of community roads, designated parking for trucks, and managing the number of hours drivers are on the road.
Edghill emphasised that truck drivers can take simple steps to minimise risks and enhance safety for all road users. “We have been talking to them…when you are finished dumping, lock your tail gate….when they mash brakes, the tail gate lifts up and that jumps people out of their sleep. Simple things.”
Furthermore, the minister stressed the necessity of addressing weight control and the ongoing issue of drivers parking their vehicles overnight in residential areas.
While the government is keen to foster economic opportunities, Edghill firmly stated that individuals cannot simply park their trucks wherever they choose.
To provide a long-term solution, the government has commissioned the Ministry of Housing and Water to develop a dedicated parking area spanning approximately 20 acres.
This space will be available for truck drivers and operators of articulated and commercial vehicles, ensuring safer and more organised parking options.
As these policies take shape, the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety and reducing accidents will be paramount, fostering a safer environment for all.
