As part of its effort to support persons affected by violence, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security expanded its safe homes network.
Currently, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud said through the Community Advocacy Network (CAN), the ministry is exploring temporary shelters for victims within communities.
The location of these spaces, Dr Persaud said, will only be known to individuals who are part of the network.
“…We are looking at temporary safe homes within communities that only the people who are part of this network will know where they are and who can come to them.
“So you have some of that which will be in operation,” Dr Persaud said on Sunday while addressing a gender based-violence medical symposium.
Safe homes or shelters as they are called are built to accommodate victims and their children under the age of 14 years. These facilities usually include amenities such as kitchen, dining room, living room, playroom, recreation room, internet access, bathrooms and laundry room to make victims and their children feel at home.
To provide additional support, Dr Persaud said the expansion of the rent programme is also being explored.
“We are also looking at expanding our rent programme where we provide three months rent to get women or anybody who experience violence out of their homes or out of their situation where they are,” Dr Persaud said.
Additionally, Dr Persaud noted that the legislation is also being strengthened to include components that cater for the enhanced protection of victims.
The issue of gender based-violence, Dr Persaud said is a “serious” one which is a “grave” concern for many.
So to eradicate this, the Ministry has a range of initiatives to provide vital assistance and support.
