In a dramatic turn of events, three suspects have been remanded to prison in connection with a brazen armed robbery at Unity, East Coast Demerara.
Lushawn Crawford, 23, known as ‘Kang,’ a construction worker from Haslington South; Renardo Persaud, 25, a taxi driver from Track ‘A’ Coldingen; and Anton Fraser, 20, a security guard from Nabaclis Side Line Dam, faced a packed courtroom on September 24 and 25, 2024.
The case began at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where the trio appeared before Magistrate Wilson.
The men pleaded not guilty to the armed robbery at Ayan Supermarket, where witnesses reported that masked intruders wielded firearms, demanding cash and threatening staff and customers.
They were initially granted bail of $50,000 each, with an upcoming court date set for October 15, 2024.
However, their fortunes took a sharp turn during their subsequent appearance at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court.
There, they faced serious new allegations: possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence, both of which carry significant penalties under the Firearms Act.
The trio maintained their innocence but were met with stern refusals of bail from Magistrate Schmidt.
The case was adjourned until October 16.
