A gold miner was apprehended by the ranks of the Tactical Service Unit (TSU) at the Five Stage Back Dam in the North West District, Region One on Friday for possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The arrest occurred when officers, acting on intelligence, stopped a Hilux pick-up vehicle, registration number GJJ 9916, driven by David Phillips, a 52-year-old miner from Fitzburg, Port Kaituma. Two other occupants, Allan John and Kester Peters, were also in the vehicle.
The Sergeant in charge informed the trio that a search would be conducted. During the search of a pink and grey haversack identified by Phillips, officers discovered a 9mm pistol, a magazine, and six live rounds of ammunition. Additionally, Phillips acknowledged ownership of a bottle of quicksilver and a grey jacket found in the vehicle.
When questioned about his firearm licence, Phillips admitted he did not possess one. He stated, “Boss man, this is back dam; I got this gun for my personal protection.” After being cautioned and informed of his rights, he chose to remain silent. Authorities noted that the serial number and maker’s mark on the firearm had been filed off.
Phillips, along with the firearm and ammunition, was transported to Matthews Ridge Police Station before being transferred to Port Kaituma Police Station. He is currently in custody and assisting with the ongoing investigation.
