Guyana’s President Dr. Irfaan Ali hailed China as one of the country’s steadfast developmental partners. He, however, highlighted that the rapid pace of development locally also requires strong partnerships with other countries.

As he addressed an event celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on Tuesday, the President spoke about China’s support for major infrastructural projects and human resource development.

He said Guyana is undergoing a major transformation now and the government hopes to position the economy as “one of the most diversified, innovative, competitive and resilient” ones globally.

Even so, the President said more support is needed.

“Our relationship has grown from strength to strength… whilst we solidify that, we believe we must work hard to win and bring new friends with us,” President Ali said.

Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan hailed the relations between the two countries.

As part of that relationship, she pointed out several major projects that Chinese companies are involved in from the new Demerara Harbour Bridge, to the six new regional hospitals and the East Coast road expansion project.

“Practical cooperation has been fruitful. Chinese enterprises are a constructive force in supporting Guyana’s transformation and benefitting Guyanese people,” Ambassador Haiyan said.

Meanwhile, the Guyanese Head of State told those gathered at the event that all countries are responsible for fighting against injustices everywhere. He said the conflicts in Ukraine, Palestine, and Haiti must stop.
