The Mayor and Town Council of New Amsterdam on Monday suspended Councillor Carol Trim-Bagot from her duties, effective immediately.
This decision follows a motion passed by the Council, invoking Cap. 28:01 of the Standing Orders, which aims to maintain decorum and respect within the governing body.
The suspension comes after ongoing concerns regarding Councillor Trim-Bagot’s conduct, which has been described as disruptive and disrespectful towards both the Mayor and her fellow Councillors.
Over the past few months, her behaviour has raised alarm among Council members, prompting this decisive action, the Mayor claimed in a statement.
In the statement, he emphasized the importance of professionalism and integrity within its ranks, asserting that all members must engage in constructive dialogue to serve the community effectively.
Councillor Trim-Bagot’s repeated actions have reportedly led to a breakdown in communication and collaboration, undermining the essential cooperative spirit needed for governance.
The statement noted that the Council’s resolution aims to remind elected officials of their responsibilities and the trust placed in them by the citizens of New Amsterdam.
“Councillors are expected to reflect the values of our community,” the statement read.
While some Councillors opposed the suspension, the Council has reiterated that the decision was lawful and not driven by malice.
It also addressed concerns regarding Trim-Bagot’s use of Council Chambers to make derogatory comments, stating that such conduct sets a dangerous precedent that cannot be tolerated.
The Council noted that suspensions are not unprecedented in local governance, referencing instances in the Guyana Parliament where similar actions were taken for misconduct.
The Chairman of the Council allowed for robust debate before the motion was ultimately approved.
