Sharmo Jones, a 34-year-old electrician was last week sentenced to one year in prison after he admitted to stealing street lights from the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara and installing them in other areas.

Jones appeared before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparandaam Magistrate’s Court.

The sentence was imposed after he pleaded guilty to the offence of simple larceny.

Police said Jones, a resident of Plaisance Squatting Area, ECD, was arrested on September 26.

An investigation commenced into the matter after residents from the LBI Young Professional Housing Scheme, ECD, reported the theft of the street lights to Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal during an outreach in the area on September 24, 2024.

The matter was brought to the attention of the Police and action was immediately taken.

During the investigation, Police said Jones admitted to stealing the lights and installing them in various areas.

Police also managed to recover 24 of the stolen street lights.
