A five-year-old boy, Fayyaz, died on Thursday after he was hit by a metal barrel that exploded at his Prospect, East Bank Demerara, house.
Police Headquarters reported that the incident occurred at about 16:30 hrs.
The boy’s parents, Faiaze Sahid and Jessica Williams, were reportedly cutting the metal barrel with a welding torch. They were attempting to make a barbeque grill.
As they cut through the metal container, it exploded and hit the boy who was nearby in the verandah.
Police said the boy was taken by his parents to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre but he was pronounced dead.
The Police were subsequently informed, and an investigation was launched.
Police ranks who examined the barrel, observed that there was a picture with a sign (that read “highly flammable”). It was also noted that the top of the barrel blew out; that part of the container hit the boy.
The child’s body was also examined by detectives, and injuries to the left hand and left side head were seen.
Further investigations are ongoing.
