Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo Thursday afternoon delivered sharp rebuttal to opposition criticisms following President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s wide-ranging Parliamentary speech Thursday.

“Our strategy is forward-looking, it’s sustainable, and it’s inclusive,” Dr Jagdeo stated.

Dr. Ali’s speech was packed with bold policy announcements and measures to support individual Guyanese and families.

In support of the address, Jagdeo noted that the government’s approach is not about quick, short-term fixes but about long-term, sustainable growth.

Speaking at a press conference from the headquarters of the governing People’s Progressive Party, Jagdeo who is also General Secretary of the party, lashed out at opposition inconsistency in calls for immediate financial relief.

He said following the President’s address, there was already concerns that the government was “doing too much.”

“We are not giving up on addressing the country’s challenges,” Jagdeo asserted.

“Our vision is about building a future where Guyana is a modern economy, with solid infrastructure and a resilient public sector.

“These aren’t quick fixes…these are investments that will pay dividends for generations to come,” Jagdeo said.

Jagdeo sought to break down key details and analyze the impact of the comprehensive agenda that President Ali announced earlier.

Altogether, he said it demonstrates the government’s wholesome and heavy investment in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and social support to tackle not just the present cost-of-living crisis but to transform the country’s economy for the future.

“We are building the foundation for the future,” Jagdeo said.

“While they promise to give cash in the hand today, we are building schools, power plants, and hospitals that will secure our children’s future.”

Jagdeo repeatedly took aim at the opposition’s critique of the government’s policies, accusing them of offering only short-term promises without a clear plan for Guyana’s future.

He argued that the government’s long-term development strategy was the only path to sustainable prosperity.
