Venezuela national dies after driver, 19, fails to stop at Camp & Lamaha intersection

A fatal accident on Thursday night at the intersection of Camp and Lamaha Streets in Georgetown has left one person dead and another hospitalised.

The incident involved a collision between a Honda Vezel vehicle and a motorcycle, resulting in the death of 21-year-old Venezuelan national, Luis Natera.

At around 20:53 hrs, motor car #PAG 2470, driven by 19-year-old Cleveland Peters, was travelling east along the northern drive lane of Lamaha Street.

At the same time, Natera was riding motorcycle #CM 8134 southbound on the eastern carriageway of Camp Street. Natera’s pillion rider, 25-year-old Yohennis Moya, was also a Venezuelan national.

According to initial reports, the traffic light at the intersection of Camp and Lamaha Streets was in a flashing mode at the time of the accident.

The light was flashing red for the vehicle and amber for the motorcycle. Despite the warning, Peters failed to stop his vehicle and proceeded through the intersection, colliding with the motorcycle, Police said.

The impact of the crash flung both Natera and Moya into the air, sending them crashing into an empty lot on the southeastern side of the intersection. Emergency services were immediately called to the scene.

An ambulance arrived shortly after, and while Moya was found to be conscious and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit for treatment, Natera was pronounced dead at the scene by attending doctor Rickitt.

His body has been transferred to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Peters, the driver of the Honda Vezel, was taken into police custody after the collision.

He was served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution, and a breathalyser test was conducted, which showed no trace of alcohol in his system.
