Tagenarine Chanderpaul commenced his campaign in the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Senior Inter-County 50-over tournament in impressive fashion, leading Demerara to a commanding victory over the GCB Select XI at the Georgetown Cricket Club on Sunday.

Chanderpaul’s performance was characterized by a well-crafted century, as he scored an unbeaten 102 runs off 135 balls.

His innings, which featured six boundaries, was marked by a calculated approach. He played a crucial role in building the innings alongside Akshaya Persaud.

The pair formed a formidable partnership, adding 126 runs from 102 balls, which set a solid foundation for Demerara’s innings.

Persaud was the more aggressive of the two, smashing a quickfire 80 runs off just 53 balls, including five fours and six sixes.

This burst of scoring provided the much-needed impetus to the innings, especially after a cautious start from skipper Tevin Imlach, who struggled for runs, managing only 29 off 73 balls without hitting a boundary.

Raymond Perez’s contribution was minimal, as he went without a score.

Demerara’s final tally was 258-9 in their allotted 50 overs, a total that proved too steep for the Select XI.

Nippy seamer Carlos LaRose was the standout bowler for the Select XI, taking four wickets for 41 runs in eight overs, while Jonathan Van Lange chipped in with two wickets for 51 runs from his ten overs.

In response, the Select XI struggled to build momentum, and despite a promising start with an opening partnership of 46 runs between Ushardeva Balgobin (27) and Brandon Jaikaran (25), they were unable to recover after losing wickets at regular intervals.

Left-arm spinner Devon Lord, who was both economical and effective, led Demerara’s bowling attack, claiming three wickets for just 21 runs in his full quota.

Richie Looknauth also contributed significantly, conceding only 19 runs while taking two wickets.

Ultimately, the Select XI was bowled out for 153 runs in 43 overs.

In the other first-round match on Sunday, home side Essequibo stunned Berbice by four wickets at the Pomona ground.

SUMMARY: Berbice 203 all out from 45.1 overs (Kevin Sinclair 39, Rampertab Ramnauth 38, Veerasammy Permaul 30, Tomani Caesar 20; Ricardo Adams 5-25, Ronsford Beaton 2-46) vs Essequibo 204-6 from 34.3 overs (Antony Adams 60*, Ricardo Adams 60, Kemol Savory 34; Clinton Pestano 3-29)
