    Former CWI Media Manager nominated for Caribbean Distinguished Service Award

    Former Media Manager of Cricket West Indies Philip Spooner is the lone cricket nominee for this weekend’s inaugural CANOC Sports Awards in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

    CANOC is the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees.

    Spooner of Barbados has been nominated in the Caribbean Distinguished Service Award which rewards persons for their dedication to advancing sports in the region.

    Spooner recently served as the Media Operations Manager of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which was jointly hosted by the Caribbean and USA in June.

    He was the Global Media Manager for the tournament and curated and managed the first-ever Global Media Hub at Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

    Spooner also led on the global trophy tour and ambassador programme with Usain Bolt, Sir Vivian Richards and Chris Gayle.

    This prestigious awards, set for October 19, will celebrate the region’s sporting excellence, with a special focus on sustainability through the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Sustainability Awards.

    Among the star-studded nominees for Caribbean Sports Personality of the Year are some of the regions brightest talents who have shone on the global stage:

    Female Category:

    • Julien Alfred (St. Lucia, Athletics)
    • Jasmine Camacho-Quinn (Puerto Rico, Athletics)
    • Marileidy Paulino (Dominican Republic, Athletics)
    • Shafiqua Maloney (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Athletics)
    • Shanieka Ricketts (Jamaica, Athletics)

    Male Category:

    • Kyron McMaster (British Virgin Islands, Athletics)
    • Lindon Victor (Grenada, Decathlon)
    • Mijain Lopez Nunez (Cuba, Wrestling)
    • Jereem Richards (Trinidad and Tobago, Athletics)
    • Roje Stona (Jamaica, Athletics)
    • Sebastian Rivera (Puerto Rico, Wrestling)

    The battle for Caribbean Team of the Year includes dominant teams from across the region:

    Female Category:

    • Dominican Republic Volleyball Team
    • Barbados Triathlon Team
    • Puerto Rico Basketball Team
    • USVI Basketball Team

    Male Category:

    • Barbados U-14 Football Team
    • Curaçao Baseball Team
    • Dominican Republic Football Team

    The Caribbean Breakthrough Award will honour athletes who have earned their first medal at a continental or international multi-sport competition:

    • Thea LaFond (Dominica, Athletics)
    • Adaejah Hodge (British Virgin Islands, Athletics)
    • Junior Alcantara Reyes (Dominican Republic, Boxing)
    • Cristian Javier Pinales (Dominican Republic, Boxing)
    • Julien Alfred (St. Lucia, Athletics)

    Other categories to be awarded at the star-studded event include the Caribbean Sports Media Award, with nominees like Sebastian Cyrus (St. Vincent and the Grenadines), Jesus Leonardo Reyes (Dominican Republic), and Anmar Goodridge-Boyce (Barbados) recognised for their contributions to Caribbean sports media.

    The Caribbean Distinguished Service Award with individuals such as Sonia Fulford (Soccer), Judy Simons (Administration), Shane Cadogan (Athletes Advocacy), and Philip Spooner (Administrator) for their dedication to advancing sports in the region.
