After playing unbeaten to be deservedly promoted to League A of the Concacaf Nations League, Guyana’s Golden Jaguars are back to League B after a winless outing in League A.
Their latest defeat came Tuesday evening when Suriname crushed them 5-1 at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo.
Sheraldo Becker opened the match with a brace, scoring in the 3’ and 10’, with right-footed finishes inside the box.
Jalen Jones struck in the 13’ to cut the deficit for Guyana, scoring from close range following a delivery from a set piece.
Virgil Misidjan extended the hosts’ lead in the 33’ with his second goal of the campaign.
Goals by Denzel Jubitana in the 51’ and Ridgeciano Haps in the 69’ rounded out the win for Suriname.
After the match, Jones said, “We got relegated, and now we want to come back up.”
Suriname improved to seven points, besting Guatemala on goal difference, to finish second place in Group A of League A and advance to the quarterfinals.
Guyana finished sixth in the group and will play in League B in the tournament’s next edition.
More so, Guyana qualified for the Play-in tournament, where they will face Barbados in two legs between November 11 and 19.
The play-in round will be contested by the two bottom teams from each group of League A (teams ranked 5th and 6th) and the top four teams from League C (three group winners and the best team among the group runners-up).
Each tie is played on a home-and-away two-legged basis, with the order of legs to be determined later.
Winners will qualify for the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualification.
