Copassa Group, a leading independent insurance agency, publicly announced its presence in Guyana during the International Business Conference on Wednesday, revealing plans to introduce tailored insurance solutions to the Guyanese community.

Founded and led by Lida Guichard Henning, the company brings over 40 years of experience in health and life insurance across the Caribbean, Latin America, and the United States.

Copassa is now registered in Guyana, marking its expansion into the local market.

Henning, who has spent decades crafting a niche for Caribbean people in the health and life insurance space, highlighted the importance of insurance services tailored to regional needs.

She shared that the company’s primary focus is to assist the insured in navigating medical crises, particularly when they arise in foreign territories.

She cited a example of how she helped facilitate medical care between Haiti and the Cayman Islands, adding that Copassa could similarly assist Guyanese in the future as the nation develops its world-class healthcare system.

“I started this journey when I was just 20,” Henning explained.

“I saw a gap in the market where people in the Caribbean were not paying enough attention to health and life insurance, and many were unaware of the complexities involved in seeking medical care in the United States, particularly for services like organ transplants that are not available in many regional countries.”

This gap in healthcare awareness led Henning to develop Copassa’s concierge service, a solution designed to guide individuals through complicated medical cases and ensure they receive the best care available.

Henning noted that this service has been crucial for patients who have had to travel to destinations like the U.S. and Colombia for life-saving medical treatment.

In Guyana, Henning recognised a similar need. She noted that, in the two years since registering Copassa locally, the company has identified a demand for services that can bridge major medical gaps and help families plan for the future, including ensuring the financial security of the next generation in case of an unforeseen event.

“There’s a significant need for awareness around family planning and how to secure the future of loved ones if something happens to the breadwinner,” Henning said.

Henning also shared her experience in other key territories where she has helped people access medical care, including Colombia and the Cayman Islands.

Looking ahead, Henning is optimistic about Guyana’s potential as a medical tourism destination. While many patients from the region currently travel to North America for treatment, she sees an opportunity to bring people to Guyana as the local healthcare system develops and becomes increasingly competitive.
