Noting that all citizens ought to comply with the laws of the country, Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday made it clear that no corrupt practice will be tolerated by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), regardless of relationship.
“The PPP will not tolerate corruption in the police force or anywhere else, and when we find corruption in the police force or anywhere else, there will be no attempt to cover it up.
“So if you believe that you have a special relationship with the government and that we will pursuant to that relationship, cover up your misdeeds, you have it wrong,” Jagdeo said.
Jagdeo, who is also the General Secretary of the PPP/C, was at the time speaking at a press conference and responding to a question about a senior police officer being at the center of a financial crime investigation involving hundreds of millions of dollars.
Over the past months, Deputy Commissioner of Police (ag) Calvin Brutus has been the center of a probe into alleged financial irregularities. The probe was headed by the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU).
In a statement issued by the Guyana Police Force on Tuesday, SOCU said the probe concluded on October 1, 2024 and the unit recommended dozens of charges against Brutus.
So now, the relevant files have been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice on the way forward.
A day after, on Wednesday, Brutus moved to the High Court to file an application in the High Court, seeking to reverse decisions made against him in the course of the probe.
In court documents seen by the News Room, Brutus argues that he has been unfairly denied access to his bank accounts, which has prevented him from conducting business.
He also claims to have been subjected to victimization during the investigation. His application seeks multiple declarations from the court regarding actions he believes were improper.
On Thursday, Jagdeo said the PPP/C will be responding to this motion in court.
“…And it may not be beneficial to the particular individual because we will go into great details about it, what our findings were in the procurement system when he was heading the administration of the Police Force,” the Vice President said.
Jagdeo highlighted that from inception, the government has made it clear that the investigation would be impartial.
“We made it clear that the investigation would be professional and there has been no interference from it.
“If you do illegal things, you will face the consequences,” Jagdeo said.
