The Guyana Women in Chess Community (GWICC) is hosting the Queenside Rapid Chess Tournament on October 27th, 2024, in a continued effort to boost female participation in the sport.
This initiative builds on the success of their earlier tournament this month, which attracted new players and those without an ELO rating.
The Rouge Salon and Spa-sponsored event is a nine-round Swiss tournament with a 15-minute time control per player and an additional 5-second increment after each move.
Games will begin at 9:00 a.m. sharp at the David Rose Special School.
The Queenside Rapid promises a competitive field, featuring notable players like Women’s Champion Jessica Callender, U-12 Champion Kataleya Sam, Treskole Archibald, Emma John, Chelsea Harrison, and Saura Ruplall.
Winners from the beginner’s tournament, including Angelina Yhap, Rebha Lachman, and Lusianna Farlot, are also expected to participate.
Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top six finishers, along with a special recognition for the Best Newcomer.
The GWICC has witnessed a positive rise in female chess participation and remains optimistic about reaching more girls in the coming months.
Their aim is to bridge the gender gap in a sport traditionally dominated by males. The organization welcomes women of all skill levels, whether they want to play casually or compete at a high level.
The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) emphasizes the benefits of chess for everyone, including improved memory, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Playing chess can also boost confidence, promote social interaction, and foster new friendships.
The GCF and GWICC extend their gratitude to Rouge Salon and Spa for making the tournament possible, along with the David Rose Special School for providing the venue.
