Guyana has once again proven its academic excellence on the regional stage, securing top spots across a range of subjects in the 2024 CXC® May/June Examinations.

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, announced the country’s outstanding performances in a Facebook broadcast on Friday, revealing that Guyanese students had topped the Caribbean in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC®) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE®) categories, as well as in individual subjects such as Sciences, Humanities, Business, TVET, and Agricultural Science.

The announcement was met with excitement and pride, as several Guyanese students were recognized for their exceptional achievements.

Among them, Anaya Couchman of Queens College emerged as the Top Overall Student at the CAPE level and also earned the title of Most Outstanding Student in Natural Sciences at CAPE.

At the CSEC level, David Chowtie, also of Queens College, claimed the prestigious title of Top Overall Student in the Caribbean. He was also recognized as the Most Outstanding Student in Humanities.

Other standout students include Asiyah Karim from the ISA Islamic School, who was named the Most Outstanding Student in Business across the region, and Venisha Lall of Anna Regina Secondary School on the Essequibo Coast, who earned the honor of Most Outstanding Student in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

Additionally, Chitra Parbhu from Saraswati Vidya Niketan School was named the Most Outstanding Student in Sciences, while Carlana Alexander from St. Rose’s High School received a Double Award for being the Most Outstanding Student in Agricultural Science at the CSEC level.

Minister Manickchand expressed her pride in the students’ achievements, emphasizing the diversity of the awardees, which she noted reflected the government’s commitment to educational equity.

“No one school is dominating the list. Students from various regions, including Essequibo, Region 3, and Georgetown, have excelled,” she said, highlighting the reach of educational opportunities across Guyana.

In her message, the Minister also took the time to acknowledge the hard work and support of teachers, parents, and families who have played a crucial role in helping these students achieve their remarkable success.

“I am incredibly proud to announce that Guyana has once again topped the Caribbean in both CSEC and CAPE exams. Our students have excelled not just in individual subjects but in comprehensive areas like humanities, business, science, TVET, and agriculture,” Minister Manickchand stated.

“This is a testament to the hard work of our students and the dedicated efforts of their teachers and families.”

The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) had delayed the release of this year’s outstanding performances, but the announcement was warmly welcomed by the Guyanese public, who celebrated the country’s achievements across the region.

Minister Manickchand also noted that more detailed information, including the subjects and grades of the awardees, will be released soon. She closed her remarks by offering congratulations to the students, their families, and educators for their role in Guyana’s continued success in regional academic competitions.

“Warmest congratulations to Anaya Couchman, Dave Chowtie, Asiyah Karim, Venisha Lall, Chitra Parbhu, and Carlana Alexander. You have made us all proud. To all the teachers and parents who supported these students, thank you. We are proud of you too,” she added.
