The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has issued an important update to pensioners regarding the delay in the distribution of Old Age Pension books.
This delay follows the discovery of unauthorized and fake pension books, which have raised serious concerns about the integrity of the pension delivery system.
In response to these findings, the Minister of Human Services has requested an immediate investigation by the Guyana Police Force.
As a result of this investigation, the usual early distribution of Old Age Pension books has been postponed. However, the Ministry has assured pensioners that the 2025 Old Age Pension books are currently being printed with enhanced security features designed to prevent tampering and counterfeiting.
These updated pension books will be available for distribution starting in December 2024.
In addition, the Ministry is coordinating the distribution of the new books to coincide with the encashment of the December 2024 vouchers in several regions. A detailed schedule, including specific dates and times for the distribution, will be made available through all media outlets.
For those who have not yet received their 2024 pension books, the Ministry has printed an additional 3,000 books, which also feature new security enhancements. These will be available from November 25, 2024, onwards.
Over the past three years, the number of pensioners has risen significantly to more than 70,000, reflecting the growing demand for services.
The Ministry also encourages pensioners to consider using the banking system for pension payments, as pension funds are deposited directly into bank accounts within the first five days of every month, eliminating the need for physical books.
While the Ministry regrets any inconvenience caused by the delays, it emphasizes that these measures are crucial to improving the accountability and integrity of the pension delivery system, ultimately benefiting pensioners.
The Ministry is currently awaiting the results of the ongoing investigation into the fraudulent pension books.
Pensioners are encouraged to stay informed through public announcements and media outlets for further updates on the distribution process.
