The Brandon Henry-led Georgetown team emerged champions of the Demerara Cricket Board’s ‘Next Generation’ Inter-Association Under-15 tournament, winning their final round game against West Demerara on Sunday to finish with an unbeaten record.

In a rain-affected game reduced to 27 overs per side, Georgetown won by nine wickets.

Spinner Makai Dowlin was named Player-of-the-Match for his splendid figures of 5-14 as West Demerara, batting first, were dismissed for 84 in 25.3 overs.

Dowlin, the son of former Guyana and West Indies cricketer Travis Dowlin, got support from Henry (2-18), and seam pair Prosper Jacobus (1-6) and Orwin Jordon (1-19).

Georgetown conceded 37 extras, with Patrice Fraser (16) and Inshan Harcharan (15) being the top scorers with the bat.

In reply, the in-form opener Lomar Seecharran anchored the chase with a solid 44 not out, with Yeshua Hutson (16*) keeping him company when victory was achieved off the last ball of the 14th over.

Opener Khush Seegobin, the tournament’s leading run-scorer, was dismissed for two by Fraser, the top wicket-taker of the competition.

With four wins, Georgetown finished with 19 points, representing a combination of match and fast bowling points.

The Select XI, whose final round game against East Coast at LBI was abandoned due to a damp outfield, ended in second position on 12.6 points, followed by East Coast (12), West Demerara (7.4) and East Bank (1.2)

In the other fifth round game between the Select XI and East Coast on Sunday, no play was possible.

The match was called off at 14:00h (the latest a T20 contest could have started) owing to some damp spots on the outfield, following overnight and morning showers.

The outcome of the game would have determined which of the two sides finish second, while it provided players one final opportunity to impress the Demerara selectors.

Understandably, parents and players were disappointed with the decision to abandon the game.
