Yvette Daniels, 54, and Vishnudat Mohabir, 48, died early Sunday morning after they were hit by a vehicle while crossing the Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo Public Road.
Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred at about 02:00 hrs Sunday.
Motorcar #PKK 9890, driven by 29-year-old Vickash Dhunao, was reportedly proceeding east along the northern side of the Tuschen public road at a fast rate when the front portion of the vehicle collided with the two pedestrians.
Daniels and Mohabir were crossing the road from north to south.
As a result of the collision, the pedestrians were flung into the air and fell onto the road surface where they received severe injuries on their bodies.
Dhunao’s car then collided with another motor car (#PGG 5073) which was stationary on the northern side of the road, before coming to a halt about 100 yards from the accident scene.
The 29-year-old driver reportedly fled the scene but was later arrested.
The two pedestrians were pronounced dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Technicians. Their bodies were escorted to Ezekiel Mortuary for storage, awaiting post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, a breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver, and alcohol was found in his breath (.070% and .071% micrograms).
The driver is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.
