The Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) Friday morning withdrew its application to have embattled cop Calvin Brutus’ bail revoked and him remanded to prison.
That application was made in the context of the allegation made that Brutus attempted to flee Guyana from Lethem to Brazil, last December 16. The State had filed an affidavit in support of that application.
When the matter came up before Chief Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty, lawyers Eusi Anderson, Darren Wade, Yuborn Allicock, Earl Daniels and Dominic Bess prepared an affidavit in answer.
“We asked the court to compel the State to give us reason. The court cannot force the State to give us reason, Her Worship tried, but the State held on that they were just withdrawing,” Anderson told the News Room.
The application was withdrawn and the State maintained it was not going to disclose the reasons for its move.
Weeks after his initial court appearance, Brutus, Deputy Commissioner of Police (ag), faced an additional 201 financial crime charges and was placed on bail.
This meant that he is currently facing a total of 231 charges.
Brutus, his pregnant wife, his driver, and a businessman were placed on bail totaling $9.1M after they faced a slew of charges, the majority of which were financial crimes of hundreds of millions of dollars belonging to the Guyana Police Force.
