The year 2024 saw Guyana’s highest number of pensioners, with a 17% increase from 2023.

This was disclosed by Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud, at the ministry’s year-end press conference.

Minister Persaud spoke extensively on the Ministry’s work toward improving the quality of life for senior citizens, including the restoration of water and electricity subsidies.

Various programmes and vouchers were also available for seniors to benefit from. The ministry was also able to provide 1,000 seniors with tested spectacles through the eye care programme.

Dr Persaud made mention to a “transformational” programme launched this year. It entails a team from the Ministry going into communities and having weekly sessions to engage seniors in recreational and educational activities.

Seniors are also being involved in developing digital literacy so they will be able to use smart phones, fill forms online, and engage in other practical digital activities. This is a part of the Ministry and Government’s aim to narrow the digital divide globally.

Additionally, for pensioners who made it to 100 years old and above, there is The Century Club, which was established in 2022. Minister Persaud noted that the Ministry “will continue to commit to this programme.”
