Four-Day: Hercules wants batsmen to focus on ‘long innings’

Guyana Harpy Eagles are gearing up for the 2025 First-Class season with two Four-Day practice matches, the first potentially starting on January 4.

With team spots highly competitive, Head Coach Ryan Hercules aims to see players demonstrate the discipline and strategy required for the upcoming season, with a particular emphasis on batting skills.

For fringe players, these trial matches represent a key opportunity to earn a place in the Eagles’ lineup.

The management views these games as more than mere trials; they are a chance for players to adopt a winning mentality crucial for success at the First-Class level.

Hercules told News Room Sport that he wants to see batsmen occupying the crease for extended periods and execute the team’s established blueprint.

He highlighted the regional struggle with occupying the crease and hoped that the Eagles could buck this trend and capitalise on bonus points.

The trials are seen by team management as more than just assessments; they want players to adopt a decisive approach that translates to first-class success.

Last season, the defending champions managed only five centuries: two from Tevin Imlach and one from Kevin Sinclair, Kemol Savory, and Tagenarine Chanderpaul.

“We want players to bat for extended periods; that’s the challenge I’ll set for them,” Hercules shared.

With the West Indies’ Test series in Pakistan concluding on January 24, key players Sinclair, Imlach, and Gudakesh Motie might miss the first match against Barbados Pride, opening opportunities for new leadership and team selections.

Outstanding performances in these trials will be crucial for securing a place in the squad.

Despite a period of white-ball cricket since the last Regional Four-Day competition in April 2024, Hercules is confident the squad can refocus on the longer format.

The Eagles, led by Imlach in 2024, won their seventh title in nine seasons, claiming the top prize of US$250,000.

Four of their seven matches this season are scheduled for the National Stadium, Providence.
