Man who stabbed co-worker to death claims self-defence

A New Year’s Day murder claimed the life of Reinsford Kenny at Kumung Kumung Backdam, Puruni River.

The suspect, Alpha Osafha McPhoy, also known as ‘Bat’, is a 28-year-old gold miner from Georgetown.

McPhoy was arrested and reportedly confessed to stabbing Kenny but claimed it was in self-defence.

According to a police report, both men were employed by businessman Rhyburn Elcock. The businessman told police that Kenny arrived at his shop intoxicated and was behaving disorderly.

Elcock said he removed Kenny from his premises and he later learned that the suspect stabbed him [Kenny] during a commotion outside.

A coworker, Jermain Sampson attempted to break up a knife altercation between Kenny and McPhoy but was also stabbed.

Sampson said he later found Kenny lying motionless with a chest wound.
