President Dr. Irfaan Ali has emphasised the crucial role of sport in uniting communities and boosting Guyana’s economy through tourism.
Speaking at his end-of-year press conference for 2024, President Ali pointed to the recent boom in hotel development and stressed the importance of investments that draw visitors to the nation.
He announced the government’s commitment to improving facilities to host regional international sporting events.
“With new hotels emerging, we must ensure they are filled, and we’re already seeing returns from our tourism investments,” the President stated.
From January to October 2024, visitor numbers increased by 15% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching nearly 300,000, according to Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Walrond.
President Ali highlighted the significance of developing sports facilities, including car racing, horse racing, cricket, and football, as key attractions.
In 2024, the government, with key partnerships, introduced the Global Super League, a new T20 Franchise League with teams from Guyana, Bangladesh, Australia, Pakistan, and England competing at the National Stadium in Providence.
President Ali’s vision is to transform Guyana into a hub for entertainment and sport tourism, harnessing sport as a driver for tourism and economic growth.
