Old Demerara Harbour Bridge will not become ‘scrap iron’ – Edghill

The government is forging ahead with the establishment of the new Demerara Harbour Crossing, a four-lane high-span structure that is expected to reduce traffic congestion when is completed by August 31, 2025.

At a weekend press conference, Public Works Minister Juan Edghill noted that the existing bridge will not become mere scrap iron.

Instead, he said there are many options for its productive use.

“No final decision has been made but it will not be scrap iron,” Edghill said at his ministry’s end-of-year press conference.

Among the options, Edghill said, would be using the structure to join the islands of Leguan and Wakenaam. It could also be used at Kwakwani or across Canje Creek.

No matter where it is used, Edghill said the bridge will contribute to Guyana’s development.
