Police ranks on Sunday night found an unlicensed firearm and seven rounds of ammunition after they stopped a vehicle and requested to carry out a search in Sophia, Georgetown.

Police Headquarters reported that at about 23:20hrs Sunday, ranks were mobile patrol duties in ‘D’ Field Sophia when they observed a white Sienta motor vehicle (#HD 3450) proceeding south along a road in the area with three male occupants inside.

One of the ranks signaled the driver of the car to stop and he complied. The ranks then requested to conduct a search of the motor vehicle. The individuals agreed but when the Officers requested that the occupants exit the vehicle, one of the occupants exited the car and began running south along Black and White Road and turned east into a street.
One of the ranks, a Lance Corporal, gave chase during which he observed this individual take out a black object (a firearm) from the waist of his pants, throw it on the ground, and continue running away. The man made good his escape.
The rank then picked up the object left behind; it was a 9MM pistol, without any serial number.
The other two occupants in the vehicle gave their names as Kevin Felix, a 46-year-old taxi driver from Lamaha Park, Georgetown; and Toussant Benjamin, a 22-year-old construction worker of ‘B’ Field Sophia.
Police said a search was carried out on their persons and the car but nothing of evidential value was found. They were, however, arrested and escorted to the Turkeyen Police Station.
Felix told Police Officers that he was plying his trade that night when he received a call on his cellular phone from a male who told him to pick him up at Third Street Cummings Lodge. On his arrival at the pickup spot, he reportedly observed it was two men; he recognised one man as “Johnathon” (only name given), the brother of one of his frequent passengers from ‘A’ Field Sophia, and Benjamin.
After picking up the men, they told him they were going to ‘A’ Field Sophia, and while en route they were stopped by the police patrol.
The driver denied having any knowledge that Jonathan had a firearm in his possession. Checks were made in the area for Jonathan but he was not located.
Meanwhile, the firearm was taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary where it was fumed for latent fingerprints. The magazine was ejected from the firearm and it contained seven rounds of 9MM ammunition. Investigations continue.
