Moonie Ramnarine, a 65-year-old businessman from Lesbeholden, Black Bush Polder, Region Six is on $1 million station bail after allegedly shooting and killing 29-year-old Yognand Chaitram.

Chaitram is a cane harvester from Alness Village. He died on New Year’s morning.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum told the News Room that
Ramnarine is required to report to the Police Station regularly since his period of detention has reached its conclusion.

As part of the ongoing investigation, authorities are currently awaiting legal advice to determine the next steps in this serious matter.

Yognand’s brother, Devendra Chaitram had told reporters that at about 10:00 hrs on January 1, after a long day of labouring in the rice fields, he and his sibling proceeded to a nearby shop run by Ramnarine.

Devendra noted that upon their arrival, the atmosphere in the shop was lively, with several patrons consuming alcoholic beverages.

Devendra recounted that they called on  Ramnarine and he asked the two to leave. He said his brother stopped and was talking to some known individuals who were present while he exited to catch public transportation on the access road.

But in a matter of minutes, Devendra said, Ramnarine shot his brother. The businessman is a licensed firearm holder and owns a .32 pistol.

Yognand was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to the Mibicuri Hospital. He was a father of three.

A postmortem examination conducted on the remains of Yognand revealed that he succumbed to shock and hemorrhage resulting from a gunshot injury sustained.

Devendra said he and his brother visited the shop to change money. He said it was not the first time they went to the shop and he is uncertain why the businessman shot his brother.

Following the distressing event, law enforcement authorities were promptly notified, leading to the immediate apprehension of Ramnarine for questioning concerning the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Police said two .32 spent shells were recovered — one inside the shop and one outside (near the gate).
