An investment of more than $369 million was made in land and water transportation for Guyana’s Indigenous Peoples last year, a sum Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai said is a big investment that plays a huge role in their economic activities and social life.

At a press conference Wednesday to review the work of the ministry in 2024, she said government continues to make such investments in land and water a priority.

Across the hinterland various modes of transportation are necessary, among them river and land.

According to Minister Sukhai, 43 boats and outboard engines for various communities have been acquired, along with 19 minibuses for various purposes including for hire and school children transportation.

Further, eight pick-ups for village and hired transportation were procured, along with 35 ATVs, nine lorries, and a canter.

“This investment has had positive impact in the villages that have benefited and whether you are in Regions One, Seven, Eight, or Nine, the investment in land and water is always critical, so our government continues to ensure that safe travels continues to be a priority,” Sukhai expressed.

She said her ministry is pleased that the annual budget allocates the funds to procure the items requested for the communities.

While $263 million was invested in land transportation, more than $106 million was advanced for water transportation.
