The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly transformed the landscape of Regional Four-Day Cricket.

Since Cricket West Indies (CWI) commenced the Professional Cricket League (PCL) in 2014, it has opted for a full home-and-away format; six franchises complete 10 matches- five at home and five away.

Now, franchises are limited to a maximum of seven matches over three months at the beginning of the year.

In 2023, CWI organised the Headley-Weekes Tri-Series, giving standout performers from the Four-Day Championship and the West Indies Academy additional opportunities.

Additionally, in 2024, the Combined Campuses and Colleges were re-introduced, and West Indies Academy was added to the First-Class set-up.

Speaking on the widely-listened-to Barbados radio show, Mason and Guest, Miles Bascombe, the Director of Cricket at Cricket West Indies, addressed the financial constraints that have led to this condensed series.

“We understand that more matches are preferable, but we must weigh the costs of expanding the First-Class cricket schedule against the potential benefits of A-Team play. It’s important to note that strong performances in First-Class cricket don’t necessarily prepare players for international competition,” Bascombe remarked.

He emphasised the value of A-Team tours in allowing Caribbean players to measure themselves against international standards.

“Ideally, we would like to have home and away fixtures for A-teams, but logistical challenges often make this impractical,” he added.

Bascombe also confirmed that the postponed A-Team tour by South Africa is set to take place this year alongside a bilateral series for the Academy.

The upcoming First-Class competition will commence on January 29, with 28 matches being contested across seven rounds.

Guyana Harpy Eagles, winners of the last two editions, will defend their title against seven other teams.
