Jairam Bissessar, a businessman of Region Two (Pomeroon- Supenaam), was on Tuesday sentenced to one month imprisonment after he was found guilty of assaulting a Police Corporal.

The sentenced was handed down by Magistrate Tamieka Clarke at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court.

On January 2, 2025, Bissessar assaulted Police Corporal Hakim Atkins of the Anti-Crime Patrol Divisional Headquarters, Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast at Lima Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast.

He was charged with the offence of assault of a peace officer contrary to Section 28 (b) of the Summary Jurisdiction Offences Act, chapter 8:02.

On Tuesday, when the matter was heard, Bissessar was absent. The News Room understands that Bissessar was seriously ill, resulting in his absence.

However, an ex parte trial was conducted in his absence. Bissessar was found guilty and sentenced.

He was subsequently arrested and placed in custody to serve the sentence. The man still, however, requires medical support which he is said to be receiving.
