President Dr. Irfaan Ali said a second gas-to-energy project and the construction of a deepwater port must be completed within the next five years.

The Guyanese Head of State spoke at Saturday’s opening of the Vreed-en-Hoop Shorebase Inc (VEHSI) project.

“The second gas project in Berbice and the deepwater port, in the next term, it is not whether it will happen, it must happen because these are key investments for the structural transformation of our country,” President Ali declared.

President Ali and the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) are seeking reelection in Guyana’s upcoming General and Regional elections, expected in the last quarter of 2025.

Ahead of those elections, the President has been highlighting the government’s focus on continued investments in mega projects. These projects, he explained, should help position Guyana as a regional energy supplier, and transportation and logistics hub.

An oil refinery is another project under serious consideration. President Ali said this venture should help Guyana convert its offshore oil resources into further benefits for the country.

“We can’t have one million barrels of crude and we don’t have the positioning power of the region.

“We learn from the best. Positioning power helps you in trade negotiations,” he explained.

The President added that the government is focused on using substantial oil resources to fuel the development of other sectors of the economy.
