Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has once again expressed his disapproval of the contributions made by the opposition APNU+AFC coalition, this time during the parliamentary debates on the 2025 national budget.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday as the debate drew to a close, Jagdeo dismissed the opposition’s performance as dysfunctional, delusional, and dishonest among other things.

The Vice President, who opted not to participate in the debates this year, explained that he found little of substance in the opposition’s contributions, a sentiment he has expressed during previous budget debates.

He criticised the opposition MPs for presenting “contradictory and incoherent” plans, often claiming to support large infrastructure projects while simultaneously criticising the government’s own infrastructure agenda.

“I like a challenge.

“For them, anybody comes up with anything and says the APNU+AFC will implement it if in government,” Jagdeo said, accusing the opposition MPs of having different individual plans that are often contradictory and incoherent.

Jagdeo also took issue with the opposition’s claims about the economic conditions when they left office. He dismissed their assertions that the country was in a better state in 2020 compared to the present day as a form of “cognitive disease.”

He further pointed out the APNU+AFC’s dismal performance across key sectors such as water, housing, health, and education during their time in office, saying that the opposition had “failed to deliver.”

“You cannot deny the facts – their record in government was one of incompetence. They didn’t prioritise spending or investing in critical sectors,” Jagdeo stated.

“They want to rewrite history and pretend that they left the country in a good place… the evidence says otherwise.”

The Vice President also addressed what he termed the opposition’s “dishonesty” and their attempts to downplay their failures by blaming the current government for the country’s challenges.

The Vice President also addressed concerns of racism and elitism in some of the opposition’s recent statements.

“There’s always an underlying tone of discrimination in some of their presentations,” Jagdeo said.

They are racist and elitist… and they try to distract the public with these old, worn-out accusations of corruption,” he added.

Jagdeo specifically called out members of the APNU+AFC, such as former ministers David Patterson and Cathy Hughes, for hypocritically speaking about corruption when they were found to be involved in corrupt practices and had been part of a government that was mired in allegations of mismanagement and favouritism.

“The usual old worn issues… We have to remind them not because we are stuck in the past but they are trying to whitewash their image.

“I didn’t pay attention to all the individual performances but this is what I saw.. it’s a mediocre performance and they are not ready for the big league of running a country.

“… and not because they are bad people, they are just clueless,” Jagdeo concluded.

The 2025 budget debate is set to conclude later on Thursday.
