A fire of unknown origin Friday morning left a family of four in shambles, reeling in disbelief and wishing that it was all just a bad dream.

Mark and Cyntina Bacchus, parents to school-aged children Maya and Matthias, of Launch Stelling, Grove, East Bank Demerara, were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs after the fire destroyed their two-storey house.

They both received calls at work from neighbours alerting them to the fire, but by the time they got home, everything was already gone.

“One of my neighbours called and said to come home now. I had a co-worker bring me home but by the time I reached home, everything was down,” a distraught Cyntina told the News Room.

“I am blank and literally shutting down because everything that we worked for, for so many years, is in there,” she expressed.

Cyntina recalled screaming when she got the news at work, and subsequently blacked out when she arrived home.

“I don’t know what caused it because we’re not the type to leave things plugged in and switched on. Every single thing was plugged out and switched off. We left as normal this morning like every other morning,” she reflected.

Mark on the other hand thought that his neighbour was joking with him when he got the call but he soon realised that it was true.

“I will clean up here, see what we can salvage and somehow try to start over because everything was lost,” he shared.
