The Parliamentary Committee of Supply on Monday approved a $50 billion sum for the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), part of which will be spent on purchasing new vessels.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance Gail Teixeira was questioned about certain allocations to the body.

There is a $2.1 billion capital expenditure for marine development. Under this, Minister Teixeira noted that approximately $500 million will be spent on a new coastal enforcement vessel while $100 million is for an interceptor patrol vessel.

Both vessels will be purchased through the $2.1 billion sum approved for marine development under GDF’s capital expenditures.

“These are specially ordered and built,” Teixeira said of the two costly vessels.

Other small boats will be procured as part of efforts to expand GDF’s fleet.

Earlier, Minister Teixeira told the Committee of Supply that the army is also expanding its aircraft fleet. Without getting into specifics, she noted that additional aircraft have been ordered, and with new aircraft, there is a need for additional funds for training, licensing, and other expenses.

Over the past several years, substantial funds have been spent on purchasing new aircraft and vessels. A metal shark and bell helicopter are among the major purchases made.
